They always say if you do what you love – you will always love what you do. They also say you should find what you’re good at and perfect it. Ok so who are they exactly? Well in my life its the countless life coaches, mentors, articles, experts and people I think are wonderful. If you admire someone and love what they have done, who they are, it’s actually a great idea to mimic their steps at least to get your ball rolling.
I found an inspirational piece the other day on Etsy. I was looking for a new hairstyle perhaps some new color and found a beautiful headband made of sewn felt pieces that looked like roses. I really was impressed by the beauty of these pieces and having a ton of felt around (not hard when you’re a fiber enthusiast) I started playing with some stitches.
When you were young, you probably made a shoe box full of yo-yo’s. The basic idea is to lay in a baste line pull and cause the fabric to pucker by how tight you pull. The nice thing about felt is that it also takes shape really well. This is why so many people love working with it, layering different wool rovings textures etc. I didn’t want to needle felt my weekend away trying to get the same petal texture and definition so I started with basic cut petal shapes, tacked stitched and worked rounds until I had a great base. Adding buttons made a little sparkle, but then it hit me…
These would be such cute BARRETTES !
I had a stash of those old snap/pop flat barrettes in my craft box from some hair falls I had made a belly dance friend. My mind began to feverishly work again, how would i cover them attach and keep them sturdy in place. Making a few protocol pockets I finally hit on the perfect cover while tutorial hopping and modified it quickly.
Sometimes, finding that one thing you really like is a simple accident you build on!
I would love to know what accidents you ran into that made you very happy !
