Base row: Dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc in next 2 ch, * ch1, skip next ch, dc in next 3 ch, rep from * to end, turn.
The Double Chain (Dc)
Yarn over hook once, insert hook from front to back in the center of the fourth chain from the hook.
For your Base Row you will be inserting the hook directing in the center of the “horseshoe”.
This base chain (ch) is the only time you insert in between like this (unless instructed differently).
Later on you come up under the horseshoe.
Yarn over, draw the yarn through the chain (3 loops on hook).
The first three stitches will now be building or turning stitches.
They help “build-up” the height of the work. Every turning row or next row needs to have the same height as the stitches you are going to construct.
Yarn over, draw yarn through 2 loops on hook (2 loops remain on hook).
Go slow. When you first try its easy to draw through all three until your hand is used to the stitches.
Try not to hold your working yarn too tightly. Loose gauge in the beginning is very important.
Yarn over, draw through 2 loops on hook (one double crochet complete).
So now you have one stitch where there were two and a turning chain for future building stitches.
dc in next 2 ch
The next instruction is to double chain in the next 2 chains.
You are going to yarn over (yo) go into the very next horseshoe (yo) again and pull up a loop.
Yo – pull through 2. Yo pull through 2. Dc complete.
You will need to do that one more time to complete this segment of the instructions.
* ch1, skip next ch, dc in next 3 ch, rep from * to end, turn.
After making your two DC you are going to YO and pull a loop through the last stitch – (ch1)
Seems odd to have a chain hanging out there but there is a reason. Just like on DC when you need to build height when skipping a stitch you need a spacer.
DC in next 3 ch – you are going to create 1 double chain in each of the next 3 chains.
* —- * this is a repeat indicator. In a pattern when you see * and then instructions, it is followed by a final one and then usually “rep from to end” or something similar.
Above you are to Chain 1 (skip the chain underneath) then Double Crochet in each of the next 3 chains over and over until you reach the end of your original chain.
There will only be 39 sts (stitches) on your row.
(remember you ate three to create your very first turning dc)
